The opening Mass for the Jubilee of Mercy and the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica on 8 December will be seen around the world in greater clarity than any other Papal event in history.

This “Jubilee of Mercy” will commence with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter’s on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th 2015, and will conclude on November 20, 2016 with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. 

It was announced by Pope Francis on March 13, 2015, as a the celebration of an “extraordinary Holy Year”.

The restored tomb it is thought to have been the burial place of Maxentius' son Valerio Romulus, who died prematurely in 309,  he is said to have drowned in the Tiber — he was buried in the mausoleum.

Maxentius was the 58th emperor of the Roman empire between 306 and 312 AD.
