The restored tomb it is thought to have been the burial place of Maxentius' son Valerio Romulus, who died prematurely in 309, he is said to have drowned in the Tiber — he was buried in the mausoleum.
Maxentius was the 58th emperor of the Roman empire between 306 and 312 AD.

Some 750 libraries, stately homes, archaeological sites and religious buildings all over Italy are open to the public free of charge on 22 and 23 March, for the 22nd annual spring open day organised by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI).
Many of the sites participating in the Giornate FAI di Primavera initiative are not normally accessible to the public.

The Roman-age archaeological excavations which extend below the whole of the Vatican hill will again be visible to the public – extended, refurbished and transformed into a museum replete with walkways and multi-media educational apparatus. In the new year it will be possible to walk through the burial chambers, accompanied by our expert official guide, among small mausoleums, finely sculpted sarcophagi, statues, mouldings, mosaics, frescoes and bas-reliefs with epigraphs describing the lives of those who repose at the foot of the ancient hill.
